Stelle Architects — South Fork of Suffolk County, New York
Surfside Residence is a reimagined oceanfront compound on the South Fork of Suffolk County, New York, designed by Stelle Architects. The project transforms a formerly deteriorated house on a dune, requiring a complete gut renovation, structural reinforcement, and expansion—all executed within strict local zoning permissions. The site comprises the main two-story house, a guest house, two-car garage, free-form chlorine-free pool, and a landscape restoration focused on native species. The architecture responds to its oceanfront setting with a wood and cement panel rainscreen facade and anodized aluminum windows. The existing dark interiors were replaced with lighter materials and full-height glass to maximize daylight and views. Guest quarters on the sheltered entry level provide ensuite bathrooms and private deck access, while a sauna suite is accessible through a protected breezeway. The principal living spaces occupy a single, open second floor plan with operable doors to enhance cross ventilation. The owner's suite is separated on the upper floor for privacy. Both the main residence and guesthouse feature geothermal heating, photovoltaic panels, and restored native plantings, integrating building systems and landscape as part of the design strategy.
