Studio of Environmental Architecture — Yachats, OR, 2001

Horizon Hill House is a 3,500-square-foot residence by Studio of Environmental Architecture, completed in 2001 on a hillside near Yachats, Oregon. Designed for a retired doctor, the house responds to a coastal environment marked by dense spruce, pine, and alder forests as well as challenging weather conditions, including strong wind-driven rainstorms. The decision to settle on a south-facing site above the Yachats River allowed for both seclusion and immersion in the natural landscape surrounding the small town. The house is sited and oriented to frame expansive views of the landscape while providing shelter from the region’s severe coastal weather. Its program organizes living spaces around a central courtyard that creates a protected outdoor area and draws focus up toward the hill. This arrangement ensures natural light and panoramic outlooks from major rooms while establishing a clear relationship between interior spaces and their immediate environment. Materials and construction strategies address the need for durability in the face of heavy rains and wind unique to the Oregon coast.
