itHouse

Taalman Koch Architects — Pioneertown, California

Located in Pioneertown, California, the itHouse was designed by Taalman Koch Architects as a demonstration of a prefabricated building system intended to control construction impact on sensitive desert terrain. The project responds to its arid site by employing a minimal footprint and an openness that emphasizes both efficiency and connection to the landscape. The house's open plan and extensive glass walls engage panoramic views while seeking to minimize environmental disturbance during assembly and occupation. The structure’s energy performance relies on passive solar strategies, including careful orientation, operable glazing for cross ventilation, and radiant floor heating. Solar photovoltaic and thermal panels support the off-grid energy needs, augmented by high-efficiency appliances. Transparency and sun exposure are modulated by graphic interventions on specific areas of glazing, with screen patterns and privacy zones designed by artists Sarah Morris and Liam Gillick. These bespoke treatments frame exterior vistas and mediate light, balancing exposure with privacy.
