Three Rivers itHouse, completed in 2007 by Taalman Koch Architects, serves as a 1,100 square foot second home for a pair of visual artists seeking respite from Los Angeles. The house is positioned within a seven-acre site in Three Rivers, California, among boulders and mature oak trees. After two years of camping on the land, the clients requested a structure that would maintain a close relationship to the outdoors, offering only essential separation from the environment while preserving comfort. To meet these aims, the architects organized the house around interconnected interior spaces and exterior patios, allowing light and views to permeate the living areas. The structure was carefully sited and scaled to minimize impact on the landscape, maintaining a modest footprint among the natural features. The result is a residence that operates as a permeable threshold between shelter and open land, with the spatial organization and orientation designed to foster a strong visual and sensory connection to the surrounding terrain.
