Dialogue House

Located at the base of Echo Mountain in Phoenix, Dialogue House is a 2,200-square-foot residence designed by Wendell Burnette Architects. The project occupies a site surrounded by mid-century ranch homes and responds to its desert context by engaging with the changing qualities of light as noted by John Van Dyke in his writings on the American desert. The house is composed of two primary volumes, each oriented to frame different experiences of natural light—one warm, one cool—connecting the interior to views of the horizon and the sky above. The main living area is raised above spaces for work, guests, and parking, positioned at the back of the lot furthest from the street. Charcoal masonry walls extend out from the house in cardinal directions, organizing the site while creating privacy and anchoring the structure. The elevated living space faces south, opening views toward distant mountain ranges and the city skyline. The architecture is minimal and modern, with careful attention to shading and spatial orientation to modulate daylight throughout the year.
