Wendell Burnette Architects — Phoenix, AZ

Burnette Residence in Phoenix, Arizona, is positioned as an architectural extension of its desert garden context, responding closely to the surrounding landscape. The brief called for a design that integrates with the previously disturbed portion of the site, utilizing an existing road scar as a guiding element. The house forms a man-made canyon that both restores and redefines the connection between divided parts of the site, allowing entry by foot or vehicle into a carefully composed threshold between garden and home. This approach frames the house as an intermediary, engaging the senses to encourage a slowed experience of arrival and movement through space. The design organizes rooms so that views and connections to the Sonoran setting are deliberately curated, focusing attention outward to the environment and modulating sensory perception of the desert. Materials and form work together to extend the topography, with the canyon-like entry amplifying natural phenomena such as the sound of falling water at the evaporative plunge pool and the effect of a cooling breeze. Circulation paths and places to pause are woven throughout, enhancing encounters with elements like the scent of creosote after rain. In this way, the Burnette Residence acts as both a mediator and participant in its arid landscape.
