Alterstudio — Austin, TX

Highland Park Residence by Alterstudio is located in Austin, Texas on a site initially lacking notable natural features or mature vegetation, bordered on both sides by adjacent homes. The project was shaped by the need for privacy and engagement with a new landscape, leading to a spatial arrangement that filters movement and views both within and across the property. The approach strategically conceals the garage in the landscape, and emphasizes an inventive entry sequence that guides visitors past a stone volume defining a courtyard and cantilevering significantly at the entrance. The design is organized around a continuous stone bar that bends to form a private courtyard, anchoring the primary living spaces and creating visual separation from the street. A detached gallery building extends this sense of seclusion and provides space for displaying art, while also framing outdoor rooms. Interiors intentionally blur with the outdoors through curved glass and retractable doors, with the main living room carved into the stone element to create a vertical spatial experience. The flow between interior and exterior spaces encourages movement along and into the landscape, reflecting a modern approach to openness and privacy.
