Tarrytown Residence

Located in Austin, Texas, the Tarrytown Residence by Alterstudio responds to the need for privacy in a changing neighborhood context. The house occupies a site organized around a central private landscape, with a walled garden at the street and a secluded courtyard at the rear. Landscape design by Word and Carr, with Campbell Landscape Architecture, shapes the setting and sequences the approach to the home. The architecture shields the interiors from view while engaging mature site trees, notably a large live oak that frames the entrance sequence from arrival through to the heart of the house. The plan is structured around two abstract black-clad volumes in elongated brick and stained cedar, joined by a continuous ceiling plane that extends outward and is supported by expansive, custom window walls. These elements allow interior spaces to open fully toward the landscape. Inside, dark masonry is paired with fine millwork, exposed steel, and detailed fabric and tile work, creating a nuanced palette. The organization of rooms balances clearly defined private spaces with a sense of openness and visual connection throughout the house.
