Cabin on Flathead Lake

Cabin on Flathead Lake, designed by Andersson Wise Architects, is located in Polson, Montana. The project addressed the need for a discreet, low-impact retreat within a wilderness context that includes sensitive wildlife habitats, such as an osprey nesting area above the site. To reduce environmental disturbance, the structure was conceived as a kit of parts, allowing most components to be fabricated off-site and assembled in place with minimal machinery and noise. The design uses eight slender steel poles to elevate the building off the ground, preserving the terrain and vegetation. Exterior cladding is kept to a simple metal roof, while the interior features walls of Douglas fir and expressive Parallam beams made from recycled woodchips, reinforcing the project's ecological approach. The cabin’s compact footprint contains a warm, unadorned space, oriented to offer expansive views while maintaining a strong connection with its setting.
