Assemblage Studio — 2011

The J2 Residence, completed by Assemblage Studio in 2011, is situated within the Summerlin master-planned community on the western edge of Las Vegas, at the base of the Red Rock area. The project was shaped by both the client’s and developer’s interest in integrating the house with its desert setting, focusing on careful site orientation, use of daylight, and strategies for renewable energy and native landscaping to reflect an appreciation for the surrounding environment. A distinct canopy structure shields the interior from direct sunlight during the peak summer months, while preserving broad southern views and supporting photovoltaic panels that supply 40% of the home's energy demand. Rammed earth walls provide substantial thermal mass, moderating the significant temperature swings between day and night typical of the desert climate. The design employs a contemporary and modern architectural language, responding directly to its context through material selection and sustainable strategies.
