Schell-Wheeler is a contemporary residence designed by Johnston Architects PLLC in the foothills above Snoqualmie, Washington. Conceived for two professional mountain guides, the project responds to both the proximity of their work in the Cascades and the specific demands of the rural site. Environmental responsibility formed a core consideration from the outset, with the house targeting LEED Silver certification. The design consists of two modern structures sited to maximize natural light, even amid the region’s typically overcast conditions. Materials for the cladding, fascia, and trim were sourced from trees felled by storms on the property, then milled for use in construction. A ground source heat pump and solar water preheating system provide for the home’s energy needs, supplemented by additional strategies to improve efficiency. The result is a set of buildings characterized by careful integration with their forested surroundings and a focus on sustainable operation.
