Vernacular Redefined

Vernacular Redefined is a contemporary residence by Austin Patterson Disston Architects that interprets traditional forms for a modern program. The design reconsiders familiar elements of vernacular architecture, shaping a house that is both grounded in tradition and adapted to current lifestyles. The exterior draws on classic proportions, with a façade referencing historic organizational patterns but resolved with a crisp, modern sensibility. Rather than conventional casings, shingled window returns are used to create a streamlined detail. The typical entry pediment is abstracted, appearing instead as a floating horizontal plane that signals the house’s hybrid architectural language. Internally, the layout is organized to encourage visual connection across levels and between rooms. The central staircase is designed for transparency, allowing sightlines vertically through the home and horizontally from the living room into the breakfast room. Large areas of glazing open the interior to surrounding gardens, creating an ongoing dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces. Above, a roof deck bordered by a sedum roof continues this engagement with the landscape, reinforcing the integration between built form and its site.
