Brooks + Scarpa Architects — Hillsborough, NC

Steeplechase House sits on a 65-acre wooded site in the Appalachian foothills near Hillsborough, North Carolina. The project was conceived for a film director and spouse seeking a quieter life after years in Hollywood, echoing their Montreal roots. The house is positioned among mature trees, offering a retreat that fosters reflection and engagement with the rural landscape in the vicinity of the Eno River. The design consists of two distinct gabled volumes, housing the public and private spaces, which are joined by a transparent gallery-like loggia. This connector is lined with glass on both sides, offering views outward and creating a sense of walking among the trees. The exterior features reflective glass and black metal, allowing the building to alternate between blending with and standing out from its surroundings depending on the season. Interior spaces are lined with natural plywood, emphasizing warmth and providing long views into the forest. The steeply pitched roofs reach 31 feet, reinforcing the house’s presence and enhancing the connection between interior and landscape.
