David Coleman Architecture — Street Seattle, WA

The Inside Outside House features extensive floor-to-ceiling glazing and a flat roof, with visible steel columns on the porch.

Inside Outside House, by David Coleman Architecture, is located in a wooded Bellevue neighborhood near Seattle’s technology center. The project was shaped by the clients’ brief for a residence that would maximize daylight and maintain a close relationship with the native landscape, while still providing comfort during the region’s rainy season. The house is set back on the site, allowing for an expansive sequence of outdoor spaces defined by concrete walls and field grasses among preserved cedar and fir trees. The L-shaped plan organizes interior spaces into distinct public and private zones. The public areas are sheltered by an origami-like folded roof supported on concrete columns, creating a pavilion effect and framing views outward through extensive glass walls. Outdoor “rooms” terrace up the hillside, blurring boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and providing places for arrival, gathering, and dining. The private wing features lower rooflines and dark finishes, signaling a more intimate environment for bedrooms and baths. Collaboration with Stretch Design further articulated the interior spatial experience, while landscape elements such as courts and water features modulate movement and acoustics throughout the site.
