Ehrlich Architects — Carmel, CA, 2023

Ribera Road is a single-story vacation residence designed by Ehrlich Architects in Carmel, California, completed in 2023. Situated on protected land in the estuary of the Carmel River, the project addresses a site with pronounced views of mountains, the river valley, and the ocean. The gently sloping terrain shaped both the layout and the circulation, with the renovated structure positioned to minimize impact and integrate with the natural topography. The design responds to the variety of microclimates on site, emphasizing a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces. The architecture employs warm rough sandstone in contrast with expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing, creating interplay with sunlight throughout the day. Outdoor living areas, including a series of decks and an infinity pool, extend the living spaces toward the landscape and link the house to the beach below. Sustainable strategies include reduced embodied carbon, photovoltaic panels providing electricity for in-floor radiant heating, and generous overhangs for passive shading. Natural ventilation and daylight are maximized through large operable openings, shaping a residence that participates closely with its setting.
