Ehrlich Architects — Venice, CA, 2018

Spectral Bridge House, designed by Ehrlich Architects in collaboration with artist Johannes Girardoni, is located on a narrow lot within an eclectic neighborhood in Venice, California, completed in 2018. The client’s brief called for a residence that would serve as both a home and a continuous, immersive art experience. The project responds to its constrained urban site and context by organizing the program into three monolithic, two-story volumes that are scaled in reference to the adjacent houses. The architecture integrates with Girardoni’s site-specific interventions, most notably the 'Spectral Bridge', which connects the buildings through a glass atrium and an exterior bridge, each one becoming an inhabited art installation activated by shifting light sequences tied to sunrise and sunset. The lower level exterior utilizes shou sugi ban cladding, referencing 18th-century Japanese techniques. Living spaces open to multiple outdoor areas, including decks, gardens, a pool court, and a rooftop terrace. Interior features include an 'art lounge' for light and sound experiences, positioned between the two bridges, and flanked by separate bedroom wings. The integration of art, architecture, and landscape establishes the house as a continuous sequence of spatial and sensory experiences.
