DIVISION STREET RESIDENCE

Located in Portland, the Division Street Residence involved the adaptive reuse of three interlinked structures constructed across separate periods over the past century. The brief centered on transforming these disparate elements into a cohesive private residence while introducing new living spaces and maximizing energy performance. Among the significant interventions was the addition of a penthouse level and a roof garden, enhancing access to outdoor space within an urban context. The design incorporates nearly 2,000 square feet of photovoltaic arrays, allowing the house to function with minimal dependence on external energy sources. An emphasis on local craftsmanship is reflected throughout, with much of the construction—cabinetry, steel work, railings, doors, stairs, lighting, stucco, and plaster—produced by Portland-based artisans. Material selection and detailing prioritize durability and environmental performance, reinforcing the project's focus on sustainability and adaptive reuse.
