Sugar Mill is a residential project by Hutker Architects located on a hillside with views toward Squibnocket Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The design is shaped by the site's expansive 180-degree vistas, with a composition of hip-roofed volumes positioned to capture different aspects of the surrounding landscape and light. The entrance is marked by an elliptical stone column, referred to as the "sugar mill," which draws inspiration from West Indian architecture encountered during the client's travels and also integrates a powder room within its form. The house expresses a blend of contemporary, modern, and traditional influences. Large expanses of glass and simplified detailing are paired with walnut-stained wood floors and ceilings, referencing Caribbean motifs in a restrained palette. The exterior combines weathered cedar and copper, grounding the house within its New England coastal setting and contributing to a sense of durability and place.
