Monks Shadow Residence

Monks Shadow Residence by Kendle Design Collaborative is a contemporary home situated on a steep hillside, responding to more than 60 feet of elevation change and strict local zoning constraints. The organization of the house follows the contours of the terrain, stepping up the slope in three areas designated for parents, teenagers, and guests. Each zone is intentionally sited to provide unobstructed views of Camelback Mountain, the valley, and especially the nearby rock formation known as the Praying Monk—a landmark central to the owners' connection with the site. This visual link to the Monk, important to the clients through many years living on the property, directed the arrangement of windows, rooms, and outdoor spaces throughout the design.
