Washington DC :: live is a four-unit condominium building by KUBE Architecture, located in Washington, WA. Conceived for a transitioning neighborhood, the project explores alternate approaches to the traditional rowhouse typology. The site comprises two standard-width lots, split by a fire-rated party wall, but the street-facing facade is unified, eschewing the typical division and presenting as a single volume. The front elevation features glass bays that project outward at different angles, establishing a dialogue between public and private realms as they frame interior views. These contemporary reinterpretations of bay windows operate independently, supported by a steel frame for both structure and lateral stability. Circulation is handled through private side alleys set between the units, allowing for a dedicated entry and stair hall away from the living spaces and providing additional daylight to central rooms via large glass walls. Upper units have roof decks with expansive city views; lower units access sunken patios. The project incorporates sustainable elements such as solar panels, energy-efficient systems, tankless water heaters, and shou sugi ban siding that provides texture and warmth at the entry alleys.
