Mercer Residence

Located in Grand Rapids, the Mercer Residence by Lucid Architecture responds to the clients’ desire for light-filled spaces suitable for entertaining while referencing the traditional brick homes prevalent in the area. The plan organizes the dwelling into two distinct volumes: one constructed as a black brick box contains the sleeping quarters and support functions, while a second, more transparent form, defined by perimeter glazing and a pronounced roofline, houses the primary public areas including entry, stair, kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Solid brick side walls, punctuated by carefully positioned openings, create privacy from neighboring properties, while expansive glazing to the north and south allows interior spaces to extend visually and physically into the landscape. The double cantilevered roof reaches outward, blurring the boundary between indoors and out. Interior finishes emphasize warmth and restraint with wood used on floors, ceilings, and soffits to provide contrast against otherwise white surfaces, supporting a minimal yet inviting atmosphere. Modern features such as a masonry brick finish, curtain wall glass, and a zero-step barrier-free design characterize the project’s approach to both accessibility and contemporary detail.
