Flying Dollar Residence is located adjacent to the runway of the Flying Dollar Airport in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania. Designed by Lundberg Design for clients who are both Manhattan-based pilots, the project replaces a previous manufactured home with a vacation retreat intended to serve as a quick flight escape from the city. The site’s half-mile grass runway, built in 1928, ends at a steep drop-off offering views across the valley, and its aviation context influenced the architectural response.
The design centers on a single long, sloped roof with deep cantilevers that rise toward the south as the ground falls away, covering a guest wing, carport, garage and a two-story main house projecting from the hillside. The guest wing, completed in 2019, contains a flexible studio and bathroom tailored for use by both owners and visiting pilots. The structure relies on galvanized steel frames paired with cross-laminated timber slabs, which accommodate the 8-foot cantilevered eaves and provide exposed ceiling finishes. Thermally treated ash wood siding sourced from beetle-killed timber clads the exterior and will gradually weather. Details such as stainless steel-framed sliding barn doors and built-in steel furniture were fabricated locally, reflecting the site's aviation heritage.
