Min Design — Palo Alto, CA, 2017

The Palo Alto Pool House by Min Design is a 750-square-foot addition to a suburban property in Palo Alto, California, completed in 2017 as part of a comprehensive reworking of the rear yard. The project required a strategy that responded to the established landscape, creating a new structure that is unobtrusive from the main house yet provides a sequence of intimate spaces tailored to outdoor living beside the pool and hillside. The plan organizes exterior gathering areas leading to a screened dining porch, a glass-enclosed kitchen, and a living area partially set into the hill. A cedar-clad volume houses a sauna and acts as a buffer, distinguishing the internal spaces from a secluded outdoor shower and detached bathroom, while framing private views to the valley beyond. The architectural language contrasts with the existing stucco main house, using transparent forms and material restraint for a lighter, more open character. Structural Douglas Fir with custom-concealed steel connections and Western Red Cedar siding define the interior and exterior finishes, while bluestone paving links interior rooms to terraces outside. A butterfly roof over the living area manages hillside constraints and increases openness, supporting continuous views and indoor-outdoor transitions.
