House on Lake Okoboji

Min Design — West Lake Okoboji, IA, 2017

House on Lake Okoboji features wood siding, concrete walls, and large windows overlooking the water.

House on Lake Okoboji is a 6,000-square-foot residence designed by Min Design in 2017 for a compact waterfront site along West Lake Okoboji, Iowa. The owners sought a retreat that prioritized views of the lake and mature oaks while maintaining privacy from neighboring houses on this densely settled shoreline. In response, the architectural strategy frames select vistas, distinguishing the wooded lot from the surrounding agricultural landscape and screening adjacent properties. The structure presents a volumetrically simple exterior, its stacked primary living spaces clad in opaque and slatted vertical Ipe. These 'spatial tubes' are aligned to capture views across the water and woods, their ends defined only by expanses of glass. The arrangement directs the experience from denser, more enclosed zones to open, light-filled rooms that engage with the lake and landscape beyond. Dense service areas occupy the remaining volume, while the main level features a continuous, subtly contoured space offering multiple outlooks. Operable windows behind the wooden slats allow light and ventilation while preserving privacy, and the material palette shifts in color and texture through the interior to register changing degrees of openness and intimacy.
