V|O Residence

V|O Residence is a renovated Mid-century Modern home situated in Boulder's historic Chautauqua Park neighborhood. Originally built in 1963 and designed by a woman architect, the house underwent a comprehensive renovation led by Semple Brown Design. The clients sought to preserve the building’s architectural legacy, opting for a careful gut renovation rather than complete replacement—a choice informed by respect for the home’s historical significance in a context where demolition is common. Collaboration between the architects and the homeowners, who were involved in all finish selections, guided a process marked by restraint and sensitivity to the home’s original, modest character. Design interventions emphasize improved spatial flow and daylight while maintaining integrity with the home's Mid-century roots. A new custom woodwork screen articulates the floating stair, serving as a defining feature that filters light and visually connects both levels. This element draws inspiration from classic Mid-century details, yet avoids imitation or nostalgic pastiche. The project seeks to enhance the home's function and atmosphere without compromising the architectural heritage that first defined the residence.
