Located in Boulder’s historic Chautauqua Park neighborhood, this thoughtful renovation honors a 1963 Mid-century Modern home originally designed by a woman architect—a notable rarity for the era. Our repeat clients, the Kennedys, entrusted Semple Brown with a comprehensive gut demolition that celebrates the home’s architectural heritage rather than erasing it. The project represents a conscious decision to preserve an historic asset in an age when demolition often seems inevitable. Working closely with the Kennedys, who were deeply involved in every finish selection, we approached the renovation with deliberate restraint. The humble origins of the original design informed our careful interventions, enhancing spatial flow and light while respecting the home’s Midcentury lineage. The custom woodwork screen defines the floating stair as a unique moment in space, as a unique element that filters light and connects the two levels of the home. It draws from classic mid-century detailing without resorting to kitsch. Embracing an inclusive ethos, Hurley Place positions itself with the river as its focal point, inviting diverse communities and fostering economic vibrancy. The Riverfront development is comprised of two residential towers, a hotel tower, and an expansive central open space connecting to the river. This central connector is flanked by food & beverage and retail establishments and serves as both a connection to the Promenade but also a gathering space for the community.
