House on the Hudson, completed in 2021 by Stamberg Aferiat + Associates, addresses the transformation of a Greek Revival house on a 200-acre site overlooking the Hudson River. The project navigated a brief that balanced respect for the historic structure with the clients’ preference for modern living and clearer site orientation. The approach to the original house led visitors to its back, where later additions had compromised both function and appearance. The architects removed these previous additions and designed a new structure to serve as the main entrance, forming a contemporary front façade. This intervention establishes a direct connection with the landscape while providing living spaces more closely aligned with the clients’ Miesian sensibilities. The glass-enclosed addition reorients the arrival experience and introduces modern transparency, creating a dialogue between the historic core and its evolving context.
