Stephen Dynia Architects — Teton Village, Wyoming, 2010

Diagonal House is a 10,000-square-foot residence completed in 2010 by Stephen Dynia Architects in Teton Village, Wyoming. The site, positioned within a compact subdivision near the base of a ski area, called for a strategy that would capture daylight and orient views toward the nearby ski slopes while accounting for the likelihood of neighboring construction. The design responds with a distinctive inverted ceiling that lifts from a central core, permitting southeast morning light to enter while framing northwest vistas of the slopes. The home’s configuration steps away from traditional rectilinear planning: two-story private volumes diverge from a central pavilion, forming a ‘pinwheel’ layout. This arrangement organizes the site into quadrants, each with its own garden and terrace corner, articulated by 14-foot-high sliding glass doors. The external palette relies on subdued materials and clean massing to echo the local context. Inside, exposed concrete partitions define the main areas, and the folded ceiling structure appears to float overhead, creating a continuous spatial flow. KL&A Structural Engineers contributed to the project’s structural solutions.
