studio ma — Phoenix, Arizona, 2008
George is a residential project by studio ma, completed in 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona. Developed on a site once occupied by architect George Christianson's home, the project introduces eight single-family attached residences organized into four pairs. Each unit offers approximately 2,200 square feet of interior space with family-oriented layouts, including three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a family room, a living and dining area at ground level, and an attached two-car garage—features typical of Central Phoenix homes. Entry sequences include shaded porticoes, with visitor parking placed near the main entrances. Second-floor decks are integrated to strengthen connections between indoor spaces and the outdoors, while also providing additional articulation to the shared external areas. The material palette combines weathered and bright metal cladding chosen to respond to the surrounding streets lined with pecan trees and the deep tones of mesquite. These elements provide scale and visual variation across the development, referencing local materials and context.
