Studio Ryker — Montana, 2025

Willow Creek Ranch House features a modern design with corrugated metal siding and large windows amidst a wooded landscape.

Willow Creek Ranch House, designed by Studio Ryker, sits on a west-facing grassland slope in Montana with views toward the Tobacco Root Mountains. The brief called for a house that blends closely with its landscape, minimizing visual impact when seen from across the valley. The chosen site allowed the architects to reuse a previously disturbed area for both an entry sequence and access to a below-grade garage, reducing footprint on native land. The design balances privacy for single occupancy while remaining flexible for welcoming guests. The house is organized with the primary suite adjacent to shared living areas, offering privacy and a spa-like experience that includes a Japanese onsen and a secluded courtyard, both oriented toward the sky. Three guest bedrooms with ensuite baths and a coffee bar branch off the foyer and can be discreet when unoccupied, yet are readily accessible for visitors. The structure integrates with the sloping terrain, featuring sections that are partially below ground and others topped by grass roofs seeded to match local flora. Thick insulated roof assemblies, triple-pane glazing, and window-integrated solar mitigation contribute to high energy performance and support a move toward Passive House standards.
