Studio Ryker — Livingston, Montana, 2019

The Spring Creek Residence features modern horizontal wood siding and a prominent brick chimney between two volumes.

Spring Creek Residence, completed by Studio Ryker in 2019, is located in Livingston, Montana. The project involved an addition and entry renovation to a 1970 contemporary house recognized for its sharply pitched shed roof, a defining gesture within the rural landscape. The brief called for additional space without diminishing the original structure’s expressive form or hierarchy. The design approach prioritized restraint and supported the existing architectural character rather than competing with it. The addition is positioned to preserve the visual dominance of the primary living area while integrating a new front entry to create a clearer sense of arrival. A board-formed concrete garden wall was introduced to establish a defined boundary and bring perennial planting directly to the entry, enhancing the transition from exterior to interior. Most exterior materials and detailing replicate those of the original house, ensuring visual cohesion between the old and new work.
