Substance Architecture — Iowa City, IA, 2010

322 Reinvented features a modern exterior with vertical wood siding and a metal gable roof designed by Substance Architecture.

322 Reinvented is a renovation and expansion project by Substance Architecture in Iowa City, Iowa, completed in 2010. The original house, built in 1941, had undergone multiple additions over the decades, resulting in a compartmentalized interior lacking a clear spatial logic. The project focused on reorganizing and unifying these interior spaces, with a central emphasis on enhancing the relationship to the sizeable site, marked by mature trees within an established neighborhood. Working within the existing foundation, the architects increased the main gable roof slope and vertically expanded the primary volume, stretching it to the north to create additional living space. Windows were reorganized in a deliberate, rhythmic pattern, and the exterior was re-clad in wood siding to establish a cohesive architectural language. A series of new porches extend from the main volume, mediating between the interior and the landscape to foster a clearer connection to the outdoors. The overall form is distilled into a recognizable, archetypal house profile.
