Western Retreat is a contemporary vacation residence in Driggs, Idaho, designed by Robbins Architecture in 2022. The house occupies a site with direct views of the Teton Range and responds to its location with an architectural language referencing the region's mountain vernacular. The brief called for a modern retreat that would connect to the surrounding landscape, balancing a sense of place with contemporary requirements for a leisure home.
The form is defined by a combination of pitched and flat roofs, integrating traditional silhouettes and modern lines. The exterior features vertical cedar siding and a metal roof, anchoring the building in the mountain context and providing durability appropriate for the climate. Extensive glazing on the front elevation maximizes the views and introduces daylight into interior spaces, while the junction of materials and roof forms distinguishes public and private zones within the house. The overall composition prioritizes balance, employing symmetry and detail to quietly reinforce the house's relationship to its environment.
