Shield House

Shield House is a modern urban infill residence completed in 2016 by Tomecek Studio Architecture in Denver’s Lower Highlands. The project responds to a compact site bordered by a neighboring three-story triplex with public decks, prompting the design of a distinctive vertical element to address privacy and local bulk plane constraints. The house is organized around a tall, curving metal wall that shields the living zone from its surroundings while also shaping the primary circulation path. This wall serves both as a privacy barrier and as a device to draw natural light into the home from morning through early afternoon. Inside, heavy timber beams and traditional joinery methods, using fitted members secured with shims and dowels, underpin the structural system. Together, these features produce a visual and spatial interplay between the curved circulation spine and the rectilinear living spaces.
