Uptic Studios — North Idaho, 2023

Exterior rear view of a single-story wood cabin with dual shed roofs connected by a glass hallway over a metal grated bridge.

Cedars Cabin is a 2,500-square-foot house completed in 2023 by Uptic Studios, situated in the forested slopes of North Idaho. The brief called for a lakeside retreat with minimal disturbance to the landscape, orienting the structure to preserve natural features and provide direct engagement with the site’s wooded context and water views. A pair of primary volumes are joined by a central glass bridge, creating a light-filled transition that hovers above the sloped terrain. The building’s low rooflines and palette of natural materials—chosen to reflect the surrounding pines—allow the house to recede visually into its environment. Expansive glazing frames lake vistas and brings daylight deep within the interiors. Outdoor living spaces are integrated into the plan, extending the dwelling’s footprint into the forest while maintaining intimacy with the landscape. Interior finishes continue the use of warm, organic materials, supporting a consistent sense of connection between indoors and out.
