Uptic Studios — eastern Washington, 2023

Modern Prairie Farmhouse with wood siding and metal roofs designed by Uptic Studios in Seattle.

Modern Prairie Farmhouse by Uptic Studios stands on the open prairie of eastern Washington, completed in 2023 for a site that called for both a relationship with the landscape and a sense of rural practicality. The design addresses these goals through a composition of three distinct gabled volumes, each joined by a central rectangular circulation zone that knits the house into a unified whole. The arrangement responds to both functional needs and the desire for a mixture of communal and private spaces, while providing landscape views throughout. The exterior features vertical tight-knot cedar siding, setting up a tactile contrast against the restrained palette of black and gray. These finishes allow the structure to recede against its surroundings while highlighting the crisp roof line. Inside, a great room anchored by a dual-sided fireplace bridges the transition between the outdoor patio and the interior, enhancing connectivity. The house organizes spaces for both openness and retreat, with broad windows lighting the kitchen and framing exterior vistas, and an upper floor where bedrooms, an office, and a mezzanine overlook the prairie as it extends to a distant grove.
