Fishtown Rowhouse Addition and Renovation

Fishtown Rowhouse Addition and Renovation is a comprehensive transformation of a historic rowhouse in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood by Wyant Architecture. The project addresses the constraints of a previously compartmentalized layout, emphasizing openness, daylight, and a stronger visual connection to outdoor space. The main level was reconfigured with a focus on a generous kitchen positioned as the home’s social center. Two bay additions along the side yard permitted integrated dining and sitting areas, extending the plan while maintaining the connection to the site. A folding window wall at the rear opens onto a newly designed garden, further integrating indoor and outdoor living. The renovation preserves historic elements and introduces modern forms and materials, including custom claro walnut millwork, color-rich fabrics, and layered wall finishes throughout the interior. On the exterior, new shou-sugi-ban siding provides a unified appearance, concealing traces of previous alterations and tying together old and new.
