Bucks Retreat

Set on a six-acre wooded hillside in rural Pennsylvania, Bucks Retreat is a contemporary weekend home designed as a place to slow down, gather, and reconnect with the landscape. Drawing from the quiet utility of Bucks County barn typologies, the house translates vernacular forms into a restrained, modern composition rooted in light, material, and site. Carefully positioned within an existing clearing, the home steps with the slope to preserve mature trees, open the primary living spaces to sweeping southern views, and create a strong indoor–outdoor relationship to gardens, pool, and woodland beyond. Fieldstone gable walls, shou-sugi ban siding, and exposed white oak temper the scale of the house and ground it firmly in its setting. Inside, generous communal spaces are organized around a double-sided fireplace, while a perpendicular guest wing and a tucked-away primary suite offer privacy and retreat. Passive and mechanical sustainable strategies are seamlessly integrated throughout, supporting a home that feels both grounded and quietly forward-looking. A limited palette of slate, white oak, and limewash reinforces an atmosphere of calm, warmth, and permanence.
