Atelier Drome — Seattle, WA, 2022

The Ship Canal Floating Home features dark vertical siding, large windows, and a cantilevered balcony facing the water.

Ship Canal Floating Home is a two-story floating residence in Seattle renovated by Atelier Drome in 2022. Intended to enhance openness, daylight, and a sense of connection to the surrounding water, the remodel retained the original footprint while reconfiguring the interior arrangement. Living spaces and circulation were shifted to maximize water views, with the front door offering a direct framed perspective over the canal. The new design features a modern, light-filled interior contrasting with a black exterior. Whitewashed oak floors, white oak cabinetry, and white walls create a bright interior palette. The living, kitchen, and dining areas merge into a single open space organized around a double-height volume, with folding doors linking the interior to the waterside float. Tailored built-ins and millwork define entry storage and a breakfast nook; the kitchen island and a sink-side window reinforce transparency and views. The upper level includes a guest suite with corner bookshelf and wood-clad day bed, and a primary bedroom surrounded by water on three sides, both served by carefully detailed bathrooms with custom tile, skylights, and views. Outdoor spaces include a second floor deck connected to the interior from multiple points.
