Hither Woods is a modern residence by Bates Masi Architects, located in the coastal environment of the East End of Long Island. The design responds to its setting with a focus on materiality and environmental sensitivity, reflecting the practice’s longstanding attention to context and craft. The house was informed by research into local architectural traditions and the particular challenges of the site, which include exposure to coastal weather conditions and the desire to weave the home into its wooded surroundings without dominating the landscape. The architectural response prioritizes a restrained material palette, selected for durability and relevance to the site. Interior and exterior spaces are organized to maximize natural light and cross-ventilation, with connections to the outdoors emphasized through carefully positioned openings and outdoor rooms. Structural elements are left visible to articulate the construction process and foster a sense of honesty in the architecture. The approach to detailing and joinery draws on both traditional and contemporary methods, producing a house distinct yet integrated with its context.
