DAVIS URBAN — LoHi, Denver, CO

Patio seating outside a modern home with tall, folding glass doors revealing the living area and a garage featuring glass garage doors.

Located in Denver's LoHi neighborhood, Alley House was designed by DAVIS URBAN for a client seeking to maximize the potential of a previously underutilized alley lot. The brief called for a flexible and private residence that would comfortably house both personal living spaces and an extensive automobile collection while providing retreat from adjacent commercial activity. The project organizes a 2,900-square-foot program around a central courtyard, focusing the home inward and creating a sheltered outdoor environment at the urban edge. A palette of concrete block, zinc cladding, steel, and glass defines the exterior, with dramatic steel and glass doors opening the main house to the courtyard and blurring indoor-outdoor boundaries. The main volume rises two stories, while a detached 500-square-foot guest house offers a ground-floor living area and a master suite above, connected by a spiral stair and oriented for privacy over the courtyard. The landscaped courtyard, developed with R Design Land Architects, features a plunge pool, fire pit, and bamboo plantings. A 1,194-square-foot garage, finished with glass walls, enables the display of classic vehicles and motorcycles, and is designed for both everyday use and hosting gatherings overlooking the courtyard.
