GCR-8

GCR-8 is a 2,400-square-foot residence in Winter Park, Colorado, designed by DAVIS URBAN. Sited at the end of a former logging road within a stand of lodgepole pines, the project was shaped by the site's steep terrain and dense woodland. Initially conceived as a vacation home, it was adapted during the COVID pandemic to serve as a primary residence, resulting in a layout that accommodates both daily living and remote work needs. The design is composed of three distinct volumes: a main house, office, and guest cabins, each oriented to take advantage of varied views and site conditions. A stacked configuration reduces the building footprint while increasing daylight and visual connection to the natural surroundings. At entry, a subterranean level and perforated steel stairs lead to the core living spaces, including a multi-story kitchen offering wide mountain views. Exterior materials—board-formed concrete, steel, dark siding, weathered steel, and extensive glazing—were selected to mesh with the forested environment while highlighting a contemporary architectural expression.
