Elliott Workgroup — 2019

Completed in 2019 by Elliott Workgroup, the Granny Pod is an accessory dwelling unit designed to address aging-in-place needs for a multi-generational household. The project was conceived to provide a private yet connected living space for an independent resident, while facilitating easy communication and movement between the pod and the primary residence. This solution reflects the growing trend in the US for ADUs as a response to the shifting demographics and care requirements of an aging population. The form of the Granny Pod is contemporary and modern, featuring a distinctive triangular massing that establishes a visual and spatial relationship with the main house. The structures are joined by a breezeway, which also functions as a second-story deck. The interior program includes a small kitchenette, a living area, and a bedroom on the main level, while a separate office area on the upper level provides additional privacy. Durable, fire-resistant materials were selected to extend the building's lifespan and address specific regional concerns about fire risk.
