Watch Hill Rhode Island Residence

Located on the Rhode Island coastline in Watch Hill, this residential project by Hammer Architects involved the addition and complete rebuilding of Beach Meadows, a turn-of-the-century oceanfront house. The original structure, typical of the late 19th century, offered nine bedrooms arranged around compartmentalized interiors with limited orientation toward the views of Block Island Sound. The design brief called for a substantial reconfiguration to improve connection to the site's coastal setting. The renovation repurposed the interior layout to create open, connected living spaces emphasizing water views. Additions from the 1960s were removed and replaced, most notably with a new family room and open kitchen. The exterior redesign centered on classic shingle style detailing, blending traditional elements with a modern approach to space and light. The result is a rustic modern residence that maintains links to its historic identity while accommodating contemporary living patterns.
