Lightroom — Decatur, GA, 2016

Paty Modern project features natural wood siding, extensive black window frames, and cantilevered upper floors.

Paty Modern is a modern residence completed by Lightroom in Decatur, Georgia, in 2016. The house was designed in response to the site conditions and local zoning, with an L-shaped plan that organizes the layout to maximize natural daylight. The arrangement accommodates both the family's daily life and climate considerations, with common areas situated at ground level and private spaces above. The design also considers provisions for two children and two dogs, integrating zones for active family use along with quieter retreats. A three-story volume forms the core of the house, anchored by a kitchen that serves as a hub for circulation and gathering. Operable windows in the central atrium promote natural ventilation, while the fireplace, set atop a concrete base, extends through to the roof. The front porch references local architectural traditions through a modern lens. The material palette of cypress, marble, and granite draws from the region’s resources. Geothermal heating and cooling, along with a rooftop solar array, support the building’s energy performance.
