Two-story farmhouse with white siding, metal standing seam roof, and a covered front porch with black window frames.

Hudson Valley Extreme Makeover is a contemporary reinterpretation of the rural farmhouse, completed in 2025 by Serge Young, Architect, in Dutchess County, New York. The project began with an abandoned house in a landscape of fields and stone walls. While the original structure was too deteriorated to fully restore, the design retained its humble form and preserved select materials, creating a new residence within the original footprint. The two-story house references Hudson Valley vernacular forms but adapts them for modern living, introducing open spatial flow and updated amenities. A central half-round staircase, lit by a cupola overhead, anchors the plan and brings daylight deep inside. The layout includes living, dining, and kitchen areas on the main level, with a master suite and two bedrooms above, all kept under three thousand square feet. Salvaged elements from the original farmhouse, such as the restored mantel, an antique closet door, and reclaimed beams, have been integrated to maintain a tangible connection to the site's past. Materials and details emphasize a blend of rustic and modern sensibilities.
