Space International Inc. — Los Angeles, California
Deronda Residence, designed by Space International Inc., is situated near the summit of Beachwood Canyon in Los Angeles, directly below the Hollywood sign. The project occupies the footprint of a previous structure, and its configuration responds to a hillside site and the desire to maintain a relationship with both the immediate landscape and distant views. The residence is composed of two offset rectangular volumes, each defined by its function: public living spaces and more secluded private zones. The public areas are located along the ridge to access adjacent terraces, with living, dining, and kitchen spaces opening wide to outdoor extensions via large sliding glass panels. These panels allow the indoor spaces to blend with covered outdoor rooms, emphasizing openness and connection to the site. In contrast, the private bar containing bedrooms and bathrooms is enclosed and cantilevered, projecting into a stand of mature pine trees at the property edge. A continuous white plaster shell forms a visual and structural datum, shaping both the horizontal and vertical elements of the house as it serves as floor for private spaces and a clerestory roof over communal areas, mediating degrees of privacy and exposure throughout the residence.
