Sparano Mooney Architecture — Salt Lake City, UT, 2025

Modern Farmhouse by Sparano Mooney Architecture is located at the base of the Wasatch Mountain Range in Salt Lake City, Utah. Completed in 2025, the project responds to its dramatic surroundings and was shaped by the evolving natural light and seasons of the site. The house was designed for a family of musicians, prompting the inclusion of spaces with optimal acoustics for both private practice and intimate performances, with music rooms and flexible areas that extend to outdoor patios. Public and private zones are carefully defined, with family suites on the upper floor and communal living spaces oriented towards views of Mount Olympus to the east. Material selections include a slate shingle roof and upper wall cladding, chosen for its durability and its ability to form both wall and roof surfaces, as well as finger-jointed cedar siding on the lower level. This approach improved material efficiency by joining shorter cedar boards for siding use. Design priorities included maximizing day-lighting and natural ventilation, integrating passive solar strategies, and specifying locally sourced, sustainable, and low-VOC materials. The project incorporates radiant floor heating, energy-efficient mechanical systems and appliances, and water-conserving features, alongside landscaping that retains all stormwater on site.
