Sparano Mooney Architecture — Powder Mountain, UT, 2025

Kirigami features dark vertical siding and extensive floor-to-ceiling glazing overlooking snowy terrain at sunset.

Kirigami is a modern residence by Sparano Mooney Architecture completed in 2025, located at 8,800 feet in the Wasatch Range at Powder Mountain, Utah. The house was designed to accommodate multi-generational living with an emphasis on year-round engagement with the mountain setting, stepping down the sloped site to balance private retreats and social areas. The design minimizes its impact on the native landscape through restrained site intervention, stormwater management, and the use of native re-seeding strategies. The house features TEKKō steel cladding and hem fir soffits, which continue indoors as wood ceilings, with rift white oak cabinetry, polished concrete floors, and black granite details. The main level offers an open kitchen free of overhead cabinetry, a dining area with large windows to a courtyard, and an acoustically separated media room. The upper level contains a primary suite with a private deck and steam shower, while the lower level includes two bedrooms, a bunk room, spa/onsen space, and ski room. Performance-driven features include high insulation values, strategically placed operable windows for natural ventilation, Tesla Powerwalls for backup power, and a dedicated EV charging station. The structure is engineered to address high winds and snow loads while complying with local guidelines.
