Sparano Mooney Architecture — Salt Lake City, UT, 2025

Emigration Creek Residence by Sparano Mooney Architecture is located in a suburban neighborhood on Salt Lake City’s east bench, near the University of Utah and the Wasatch Fault. The design responds to two defining site conditions: proximity to Emigration Creek, whose sounds and views informed the home's orientation, and the seismic risk presented by the underlying fault line. The house adopts an L-shaped plan opening east, integrating both auditory and visual connections to the creek while incorporating sun-shading elements for seasonal solar performance. Client priorities included robust structural resilience, with seismic engineering standards elevated to those typical for essential facilities. Programmatically, the home accommodates flexibility, with the lower level designed for a future rental or caregiver’s suite, featuring ADA access and its own kitchen. Materials were selected for durability and environmental responsiveness, notably FSC-certified thermally-modified pine wood rainscreen siding paired with vertical board-form concrete, the latter referencing the site's geology and serving as the structural base. The project reused materials from a previous house on site through a deconstructive demolition process, integrating repurposed stone into landscaping and reclaimed framing into the new construction. The residence also functions as an evolving gallery, supporting the display of a significant art collection.
