Sparano Mooney Architecture

Emigration Canyon Residence by Sparano Mooney Architecture is set just above Salt Lake City, Utah, responding directly to its canyon environment and the needs of a family with young children. The brief called for expansive views and spaces for family gathering and entertainment, both inside and out. The home is oriented to take advantage of the natural surroundings, featuring a great room that opens to the canyon through a large, operable wall, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior living areas. Outdoor connections are reinforced by siting and landscape decisions that minimize site excavation and retain much of the native oak vegetation. The design employs cor-ten steel cladding paired with board-formed, wood-textured concrete and glass, assembling a modern, low-maintenance palette that blends with the canyon’s color palette, especially as the recycled steel shingles weather to a deep rust hue. Sustainability measures include solatube skylights for natural daylighting, efficient in-floor radiant heating, and drought-tolerant native landscaping. Spaces within the residence are designed for long-term flexibility, with a lower-level area accommodating a range of uses from guest suite to studio or home office. The residence has submitted for LEED certification, reflecting its integrated green strategies.
